Chapter Seventeen
Tinseling Once Again
It turns out the answer is no, snowmen donât sleep. No matter how hard I tried, and no matter how tired I felt, it seemed I was not designed for sleep. It would have made the endless night pass more quickly, but as it was, I had plenty of things to distract myself while I waited for the rest of the North Pole to wake up.
I had managed to return to my snowbank office without running into a giant black cat, an overly talkative abominable snow monster, or the creepy Krampusâwhatever that guy was.
I settled in with my notebook in hand and began jotting down more extensive notes than Iâd done in the past, making sure to include a list of suspects, which with two murders basically included everyone in the North Pole.
I hated seeing the list of Santas on there, so I decided Iâd focus more on the other names to start.
The first on the list was also, in my opinion, the least likely suspect, but I had to include him no matter my personal feelings.
Kertas had worked as the secretary for O. Tannenbaum for too long to discount him. He knew the whereabouts of his boss at all times, and the little dirty details that had kept the business running over the years. Perhaps he knew something that he was hiding from me, some little detail that would immediately point to him as the murderer. His family was certainly from the darker corners of the North Pole, though they were more likely to be caught stealing than poisoning. It was always possible that he was following me not out of friendship or a desire to catch the guy who murdered his employer, but out of a wish to keep me close, and to ensure I never discovered the truth.
Similar facts were also true when it came to Franklin, E. Tannenbaumâs secretary, though I had extreme doubts as to whether the bobble-headed turkey had the capabilities or the focus to succeed in poisoning his boss and his bossâs son. Unless his birdbrained behavior was all a ploy. Perhaps heâd taken to playing up his distracted nature in order to lull everyone into a sense of security. Deep down, he could always be a psychotic whoâd snapped after hearing of one too many turkey dinners...
I chuckled and shook my head at the thought. Anything was possible.
For that matter, the coroner might have done it, finding himself bored in a place where murders never occurred, and deciding it was to time to make his position a more necessary one. If there was a serial killer on the loose, there would be plenty of work for the moose.
Or maybe it was Rudolph, and heâd lied about making a deal with O. Tannenbaum to settle his debt. Heâd admitted to being at the scene of the crime, perhaps heâd simply left out the part where he killed him and left him lying in the snow?
But then why kill the father, E.
